I wanted to show you the progress we’ve made in our masterbath. We are converting an antique dresser into our vanity. Do you remember the antic furniture piece I got at the Habitat Store for $50 back in September? You can read about my find HERE. Well, then I showed you some inspiration pictures of turning a dresser into a vanity in this post. We also debate whether to put one sink or two in our vanity. Though many of you thought we had to have two penetrate in the master bathroom. Many of you (and me) thought one sink would look pick with this piece of furniture. I was so excited when one of my readers explain me how she turned the have piece of furniture into a vanity in her own home. It really got me provoke to see the potential in my little dresser. Getting a custom cut droop top for our dresser was out of our budget, so we decided to go with a omit-in sink for ours. The bottom pieces of the dresser were not in the best shape. They were falling off the dresser. So Cy took those pieces off, applied some PL Adhesive to them, and then nailed them back on to the dresser. He did this on the sides and front of the dresser. The top of the dresser wasn’t in the choice shape, so we shortsighted it down so we could put a new coat of blot on it. Cy started sanding the surface with an 80 grit, then a 120 grit, and then perfect with a 220 grit for a smooth superficiary. Cy put one coat of Minwax Walnut stain on the top part of the dresser. Although the dresser was a cherry dresser, we felt like the Walnut stain duplicate close enough. Then we did a light cover of Minwax Walnut stain all over the rest of the dresser. The top of the dresser got 5 tegument of oil-based satin polyurethane. Cy used 220 grate sandpaper between each coat. He applied only one coat of polyurenthane over the rest of the dresser. It was countenance better already. We property a drop-in sink from Lowe’s to install into our new “self-sufficiency.” The sink came with a template to cut out to sustain you fit it into the worthlessness top. Once Cy cut it out, he measured the vanity to make sure the sink prostrate would be centered on the piece. As you can see, we had to remove the first couple of drawers to make room for the new sink. Cy traced the sink bend patter with a compose, importunate hard to create a mark in the wood. Then he interest a drill to create a hole near the cut-out note. Next, he started at the hollow he had just drilled and used his jigsaw to cut on the linen. With a steady dexterity and true a few help latter, we had a whole for our sink! Cy then had to usefulness his jigsaw again to cut out the rabid beneath the top of the dresser where the bowl would sit. We placed the sink bowl in the dresser and it meet perfectly. Then Cy used a very small bead of silicone caulk to seal the sink around the edges. He also had to cut out a little more of the inside of the dresser to make room for the plumbing. The top three drawers will not be functioning drawers. But that is okay. We will be effective to use the bottom drawer, the two sides drawers, and the two side doors. There is a style of room in this dresser/vanity! Stayed tune to see our worthlessness all decked out with new plumbing and a new faucet. I cannot wait! What do you think about our new DIY vanity? P.S. If you are not following me on twitter or facebook, you are missing out on the fun pack. Here’s a pic I share of my boys while we were at Lowe’s last night pilfering out our vanity sink… I can’t take them anywhere! Share on Tumblr

Since I was going to have to preempt a modern sink, I decided to look for an affordable vessel sink.  When turning a dresser into a vanity, the biggest drawback is that the sink and plumbing can no really issue up eating up a share of your usable drawer space.  A drop-in lessen sits below the top of the dresser so the sink itself takes up a huge piece of the top two drawers and the plumbing takes up even more after that.  A vessel subside become on top of the dresser so only the drain pipes and water lines to the faucet take begone from the drawer space.

Insert bottom drawer into dresser frame. Trace around recess with pencil onto dresser bottom and back. Remove drawer and transfer measurement to outside of dresser (or drill holes at corners in order to see where cuts need to be made.) Flip dresser over on its front side and pierce out distinguished area on back and bottom with circular saw or jigsaw. Put drawers and sink in dresser to ensure everything fits and there is enough room for plumbing pipes. Tip: It may be necessary to annex an additional support along back or bottom of dresser to shore up the frame. In this project, the cross protect pieces were integral after cutting, so additional supports weren’t necessary.

Then we drilled in two holes for the faucet and the sink sink. In order to figure out where exactly we wanted the excavation we simply placed the sink and faucet on top of the dresser, in the middle, and played around the with positioning a bit until we felt likely the subside and faucet were a good ceremoniousness apart. For this sink/tape combo we wanted it right in the center of the dresser. But for the self-sufficiency I use, which is much larger, we actually put the sink off to the right side of the dresser so I would have a shallow hair & makeup working area. It’s your choice!
