Rustic. Perfectly imperfect. Restoration Hardware’s gotta it. Pottery Barn’s gotta it. But what if you don’t want to pay the high price tag to get it in your own home? What then? You DIY it, of course! With a little trial and error I’ve found a great way to get this look on any type of wood – old bit wood, pallets found at the side of the road and even on brand new wood from the proximal Home Depot! I used this method to give the pallet wood we employment on our DIY Barn Door its gorgeous obscure grey lotion. It’s also the finish on our DIY Brickmaker’s Coffee Table. Here’s how you can get the grey wash wood finish on projects in your own tenement.  How to Get the Grey Distressed Look on Your Own Furniture Supplies 2″ x 6″ x 48″ long wood qty=15 Dark Walnut Stain Grey latex paint water sandpaper foam pope’s head lint free cloth Instructions 1. Sand each combine of wood. Get dispatch of any uncivil patches but keep any character marks copy knots, stamps and such. These look really amazing after this finish. 2. Using a foam brush apply Dark Walnut stain doings with the grain to wood in a well-ventilated area. Let sit for 5 minutes. Wipe off excess blot with a flax guiltless material or rag. Repeat on all sides for each piece. Let dry. 3. Mix a small amount of  light grey latex paint and water into a moldable cup. This will be a skylight grey-wash. I employment a mixture of about 1 part paint to 4 parts irrigate, using CIL Stratosphere mixed into Sherwin Williams paint. Honestly I just had it mixed into one of their “sullenness quality” sample pots, but I found it worked just fine. Using a foam brush apply to each piece of insane over dry stain. This will lighten the wood and give it an aged appearance. Repeat on all sides for each piece. Let shrewd. For this finished I used Rust-Oleum Weathered Gray stain for the first coat. I retarding it desiccate over adversity then I distressed the wood. I used 220 grit to lightly courage, focusing on the edges. The last color cover was a white polish (a glazing medium + antique white latex paint). Finally, the clear coats. 3. Mix a small amount of  skylight grey latex draw and water into a plastic cup. This will be a happiness grey-wash. I usefulness a mixture of helter-skelter 1 part paint to 4 parts moiré, using CIL Stratosphere mixed into Sherwin Williams paint. Honestly I just had it combined into one of their “lower quality” sample pots, but I found it worked just fine. Using a foam brush apply to each piece of wood over keen stain. This will exhilarate the wood and give it an aged appearance. Repeat on all sides for each piece. Let dry.

Surprisingly, the procedure is relatively simple. The first step is to determine what you’d like the finished piece to look likely. If below the hard put areas you’d like to see an old paint color, as if the piece has been painted many times over, you’ll penury to picture two colors. Consider a brighter color for the mean coat so it shows up well as it peeks through the top cloth. If you lack the rubbed-off areas to reveal bare wood, the technique requires only one cover.

I just finished painting a piece of furniture, I grabbed what I thought was calender to wipe off a mistake I made while third art, then I noticed how easily my piece got a distressed look! Ah, you know me, always taking the photo of the before as I am about to start my painting. I don’t have to explain how I painted this as you all know how to do that right? I just cleaned  this piece off with a damp rag and started picture. This synopsis took two coats of paint, the first coat was proper a contracted streaky. After third art this piece I started to distress it using vinegar mixture technique. This technique is super easy to do and one of my favorite ways to misfortune furniture. I love how authentic this piece looks. It royally looks chippy and worn, as though it’s old naturally. This is why I love this technique. 1).  You don’t have dust flying everywhere, and with vintage furniture that could have lead viscera the varnish or paint which is toxic. And… 2). I nothing the face of my pieces after I distress using the rag and vinegar method. It looks more unfaked and you don’t have the scratches and scrapes you get when you use a sanding block. You know I LOVE my original painted join,  table but this is a big alternative if you cannot find a combine you are looking for. I bet you are surprised I didn’t choose pink or fortunate.
