Depends on the piece. I found (cheap) an oak drop leaf table with great moldings, etc. convoke a “credence table”. It was made in the 1920′,s, based on similar tables from the 1600’s. Despite what some expect, dark oak was NOT the only preferred species 300 years ago. Light oak was appreciated too. I left most of the scheme as is but did some of the trim in black, as was done primarily. Looks great. Then there’s oak furniture from circa 1900-1930 which was also intended to be golden/yellow oak in color. By all means, do as you wish, but a shame to darken antique oaken furniture in some instances. As an aside, our approximately 1903 qualifier had its original dark oak floors, wainscoting, passage, lattice originate, and cupola mantles, until the 1990’s when out innkeeper, God wave him, decided to outstrip all the oak, which now looks news. So much for “character”.

My home has oaken cabinets, oak doors, oak trim, oak everything. Everyone who comes in my Seat comments on how beautiful my house is and says it looks inclination a BH&G magazine. I am not saying this to brag or pat myself on the back, but oak doesn’t have to be ugly!!! I used a lot of black and dark cherry furniture with an almost-black dogskin sofa. Changing the oak is out of the question…there is greatly too much of it. But it can observe delightful and fresh and modern when paired with the suitable things!!! There are other solutions than regular “change it”.

My home has UGLY oak throughout. Granted, it’s not as “honey” or as light as the oak you speak of in this station. But to me, oak is oak is oak. It is a very well-made home, built in ’92. The cabinets throughout the house (kit/bath/laund) all have cathedral call, raised-partition doors, and all inner passage are six-pane raised tablet Colonial style. Well made. Yes. But it kills me that I’m stuck with all of this oak. We plan to move in three years, give or take, and my husband thinks painting white would be a) a misconception; and b) a unproductive of repetition; c) a risk. I’m appearance him your blog post. I’ll continue suffering silently. Just glad that I feel validated now that I’ve read this post. Thanks for sharing.

I bought four pieces from the Sauder Harbor View Salt Oak collection and this was the only piece I had any issues with. I'll say that this is a great join, it is sturdy, and consider great. BUT. It has a serious mean break that you need to be thoughtful of. When you connect the top board to the rest of the unit you have to be very careful how tight you tighten the screws. Apparently I flag them way too much because the screws started to press on the top of the piece. So now when you run your hand over the top of the dresser you can feel 5 bumps where the screws dislocate to push up and through. Luckily none of them came all the way through but the bumps are fairly noticeable. I hammered them down and it helped a bit but I was very disappointed that they couldn't have only if smaller force for that step to ensure this did not happen. It seems like a pretty obvious flaw that should have been noticed well in the past. So overall a good dresser, but be very careful during this step how compact you force the screws that connect the top piece.

THANK YOU for this blog! Found it by googling how to stain oak dark and followed your instructions to the “t”, even usage your links to order the supplies. I stained an oak dresser and headboard and they turned out fantabulous! I made the rookie mistake of putting on too much stain the first era but it all evened out with the first application of the topcoat. I was then going to leave it but ultimately decisive to do a 2nd topcoat after sanding and it gives a much deeper, more polished look. This is a very mild technique and easy to do. I highly recommend it. Thanks again Brooke!

Funny story…when I way to the only store in Salt Lake City to sell the General Finishes stain, the guy knew exactly what I was looking for when I walked in and asked where the stain section was. He said they get a ton of “Pinterest community” coming in and looking for it. haha Now onto sully my petticoat rack and maybe the bathroom vanities. Honey oak color be gone!
